The six different frames of mind (six thinking hats) are identified in the shape of a hat and each of the hats is a different color:
Information: (white) – consider only information that is available, what are the facts?
Emotions (red) – intuitive reactions or expressions of feelings (but no justification required)
Judgement (black) – logic applied to identification of mistakes or barriers, looking for a mismatch
Positive view (yellow) – logic applied to the identification of opportunities, looking for harmony
Creativity (green) – statements of provocation and investigation, hearing what an idea is about.
Thinking (blue) – thinking about thinking.
SIX THINKING HATS: A powerful tool set, which once learned can be applied immediately!
You and your team members can learn how to separate thinking into six clear functions and roles. Each thinking role is identified with a colored symbolic “thinking hat.” By mentally wearing and switching “hats,” you can easily focus or redirect thoughts, the conversation, or the meeting.
